Moyer’s Chicks started with a hatchery in a former cornfield and a first delivery worth remembering.
In 1946, Ernest K. Moyer began building his hatchery in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The first eggs went into the incubators that December. By January, several hundred chicks were making their way to customers through a snowstorm—in the back seat of his 1941 Oldsmobile sedan.
By the mid-1950s, custom-designed vans and trucks carried Moyer’s chicks throughout eastern Pennsylvania and neighboring states. The hatchery also began working with missionaries on agricultural and community development projects in Puerto Rico. Weekly airport trips with chicks and hatching eggs became part of the routine, and by the early 1960s, a satellite hatchery was operating in central Puerto Rico.
In the 1970s, Moyer’s began delivering truckloads of chicks to customers in Ontario and Quebec while supplying contract and independent growers in central Pennsylvania. Smaller family flocks across the eastern United States were growing, too, with more keepers ordering chicks by mail for delivery directly to their farms.
Moyer’s joined the Hoover’s Hatchery family in 2020, bringing decades of poultry experience and a strong connection to East Coast keepers. Today, the hatchery continues that work with a focus on ready-to-lay pullets.
